| Zinnias

Bright, bold, resilient natives of the Americas, zinnias signal summer. A bouquet from my mother’s garden always graced our kitchen table during the hottest months. The vibrant zinnias she planted every year helped spark my appreciation for the geometry of flowers. As I calculated the pattern for the tightly-fitted corolla and rows of radiating petals I was also reminded of a beloved Mississippi high school math teacher who fostered my interest in points, lines, angles and figures. Her name — Ora Lee Flora. : )
